To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Gundam anime series, Sunrise announced the creation of a 59-foot (18 meter) RX-78-2 statue last March 11, 2009.  After months of planning, construction and tests, the statue was officially unveiled in a laser-powered ceremony at Shiokaze Park in Tokyo’s Odaiba Island. The 1/1 replica sports a moving head, 50 light-emitting points, 14 misting locations, and is fashioned out of fiberglass reinforced plastic over a steel frame to facilitate disassembly once the exhibit runs its allotted course. The public is invited to view the “Real G” phase of Gundam anniversary celebration for free until August 31, 2009.

So how does this scale model stand up against other giants? This Gundam would have its hands full if Godzilla shows up—at 50 to 80 meters the prehistoric monster is more than twice its size. Neither stands a chance however, should the Ushiku Daibutsu decide to join the melee. The world’s tallest statue towers over both at 120 meters (394 feet).
