Nepal's Peace Ministry Celebrates Post-War Milestone? | Human Rights | Change.org

Ban-Ki Moon, the UN Secretary General, reminded governments this week that peacebuilding is not just about armed forces subduing insurgents or ministries mitigating opposition. It's a comprehensive, multi-sectoral effort that requires the mainstreaming of conflict transformation and participatory community integration across all sectors. Bravo.

The latest chance to see how commitments may — maybe, maybe not — contribute to durable improvements is civil-war shackled Nepal. Nepal's Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction claims that it will reintegrate 3,000 Maoist fighters into the common armed forces this month, part of a vital effort to mitigate the country's violence. Meanwhile, some Maoist opposition groups are rallying to change politics by peaceful means, while others, including splinter guerrilla groups, continue to run a violent insurgency.
